Gaston County is just west of Charlotte and is considered part of the south Piedmont area of the USA. It boasts the second largest population in the Charlotte Metropolitan area with 190,365
residents. Gaston County is named after William Gaston who served in the House of Representatives from 1813 to 1817 and a North Carolina Supreme County Judge from 1833 to 1844. Early settlers of Gaston County were mostly Irish, German, Dutch and English farmers. In the mid-1800s, Gaston County started to become an industrial center in the Piedmont area with three cotton mills.

You can also visit the museum for an online exhibit of Civil War Letters. In addition to the Museum, this area is home to some famous Gaston County Real Estate, such as the Hoffman Hotel which site across the form courthouse and is a fully restored hotel built in 1852 with parlors, hotel rooms and meeting rooms available for special exhibits.
Families in Gaston County are served by the Gaston County public school System including 53 schools total: 9 high schools, 11 middle schools, 31 elementary schools, and a charter school called Piedmont Community Charter School in Gastonia, for grades K through 12. Historic Belmont Abbey College, campus has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District since 1973. Belmont Abbey is one of the few basilicas in the U.S. today.
Many areas of Gaston County are minutes from the Queen City of Charlotte and the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Several major highways cross Gaston County including Interstate 85 which extends from Montgomery, Alabama to near Richmond, Virginia. Gaston County is also home to an Amtrak station in Gastonia.
