The town currently houses a number of businesses including Pokertek, a gaming device manufacturer and Harris Teeter headquarters, a grocery store chain.

In the 1800’s Matthews Real Estate consisted small farmhouses and was known as Stumptown. In 1825 the name changed to Fullwood, after the postmaster in the area and then in 1874 the name changed once again. Fullwood became “Matthews” after Edward Matthews, director of the railroad that came into town.
