The university is home to over 6,000 students and was recently named one of the Top Ten Regional Public Universities in the South in U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges" 2006 edition.
Rock Hill was named for a flint hill of rock that was in the way of the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company, which was building a rail line from Charlotte to Columbia. The town’s history dates back to 1852 and was officially incorporated in 1870.
Rock Hill's Saint Anne School was the first integrated school in South Carolina. At the time of its desegregation, the school made national news. In 1961, nine African-American men went to jail at the York County prison farm after staging a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter. It was a nationally known civil rights event and the group became known as the “Friendship Nine.” Also in 1961, Rock Hill was the first stop for a group of 13 Freedom Riders who boarded buses in Washington DC and headed south following the 1960 ruling outlawing racial segregation in all interstate public facilities. When they stepped off the bus in Rock Hill, they were beaten. Now a U.S. Congressman from Georgia, Freedom Rider John Lewis made a return to Rock Hill and as given the key to the city in 2002.
Rock Hill is a blend of historic charm and wise, contemporary expansion with a number of thriving businesses.
