Spencer Real Estate History

This small town dates back to 1905 as a township which served the railroad as a half-way point between Atlanta and Washington DC. Spencer now services the North Carolina Transportation Museum, capturing the essence of the town’s beginnings. The town was named after Samuel Spencer, who was an American civil engineer, businessman, and president of the Southern Railway. At the museum, you can explore exhibits of antique locomotives, rail cars, automobiles and more. You can even take a train ride around the 57-acre site. The museum was founded in 1977 and is increasing in size with renovations. Many locomotives are being restored by volunteers in the museum, in one of the many bays at the station. The roster contains almost 30 locomotives, but only these 10 have ever seen service on the Spencer Southern RR. The museum is largely devoted to the state's railroad history; however its collection also includes exhibits of cars and planes.
