The City of York, South Carolina

York is the county seat of York County and has a reputation of being a small friendly community. There is a strong sense of history and traditional lifestyle as compared to the hustle and bustle of city life in nearby Charlotte. The City of York is positioned between I-77 and I-85 corridors, making commuting to this town easy from many directions. York has preserved most of its historic beginnings and is home to the largest Historic District in South Carolina with beautiful homes and buildings throughout the downtown area. York is only 30 miles of downtown Charlotte and is located within 10 miles is Brattonsville, a restored pre-civil war working plantation, open year round. Carowinds, a widely known amusement park is located 20 miles northeast of York.

York Real Estate History

The first known inhabitants of York County were the Catawba Indians while the first white settlers were from Pennsylvania and Virginia back in the 1750s. The town was originally known as Fergus’s Crossroads, the name of a local tavern. Yorkville was incorporated in 1841. In 1915 the residents of the town voted to shorten its name to "York". Many original buildings still stand today. The Rose Hotel was built in 1852, has been restored and renovated as apartments. The First Presbyterian Church, designed in 1846, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the American Presbyterian and Reformed Historical Sites.

York Real Estate Entertainment and Recreation

The town annually celebrates Summerfest, attracting more than 50,000 visitors with arts, crafts, concerts, an antique sale, golf tournament, art competition, moonlight bike ride, tractor show, children's activities and more. Summerfest is recognized as the largest one-day festival in South Carolina and in 2002 was voted the most outstanding Tourism Event/Festival in SC for a community its size.

York Real Estate Development

Their involvement includes enforcement of the City’s zoning, subdivision, building, and property maintenance codes.
